The Theory Test 📚

Theory Test 📝

The theory test is made up of a section of multiple choice questions & a section of hazard perception clips.

You need to be successful in both sections of this test in order to obtain the pass certificate.

It is essential that you prepare well for each of these sections. There are numerous study materials available to prepare you for the theory test and hazard perception tests and our instructor will steer you in the right direction so you get the best available.

Part one - multiple choice ❓

Before the test begins you’ll be given on screen instructions on how the test works. You can also choose to go through a practice session of the multiple choice questions to get used to the layout of the test and how the computer touch screens work. At the end of the practice session you will be notified that the real test will begin.

A question and several answer options will appear on screen and you have to select the correct answer to the question by either touching the screen or using the mouse to click on the correct answer. Some questions may require more than one answer.

You will be asked 50 questions and the pass mark is 43 out of 50. You will have just under an hour to answer the questions. If you have reading difficulties, you can apply for additional time, and have just less than two hours to answer the questions.

Some of the multiple choice questions will be presented to you in the form of a case study. A case study shows a scenario on which five questions will be based. The subject of the scenario will focus on real life examples and experiences that you might encounter when driving.

Part two - hazard perception 🎬

After a short break you'll then be shown a short tutorial clip about how the hazard perception part works. The pass mark of the hazard perception test is 44 out of 75.

The hazard perception clips are shown on the same computer screen and you respond by clicking a button on the mouse at the appropriate time. You will be presented with a series of 14 video clips which play out every day road scenes. In each clip there will be at least one developing hazard, but one of the clips will feature two developing hazards so watch carefully until the clips have finished.

To achieve a high score you will need to respond to the developing hazard during the early part of its development. The maximum you can score on each hazard is 5. Over repetitive or rhythmic clicking will mean you will score 0 for that clip.

At the end of the test ✋

When you have completed both sections of the test you may leave the examination room. Once you have left the room, you won’t be allowed to enter it again. You will be given your result and feedback information within 10 minutes of finishing the test from the test centre staff.

After passing the theory test 🎉

When you have passed both the question and hazard perception sections, you will receive your theory test certificate which has your theory test number on. You will need this number when you go to book your practical test, so make sure and keep it safe.

Your theory test certificate is valid for two years from the date you passed the test. If you do not pass your practical test within this two year period, you will then have to take another theory test.
